Turn Places Into Stories: Add Location Information to Photos

by Angela Andrieux

Do you ever remember a trip or event by where it happened, long before you recall the exact date or even who was there? That’s why it’s so valuable to add location information to photos. Places anchor memories. It helps you tell better stories, preserve history, and makes your photo library much easier to search.

The Role of Location in Storytelling

A photo is more than an image; it’s a moment connected to a place. When you add location information to photos, you preserve context that keeps your stories alive. Smartphones usually tag photos with GPS data automatically (unless location services are disabled).

But many images need manual updates:

  • Standalone cameras like DSLRs and mirrorless models often don’t include GPS.
  • Scanned images—family albums, prints, or negatives—never have location data.

Adding this info ensures every photo in your collection is meaningful and searchable.

Why It Improves Searchability

Mylio Photos makes it easy to find images once you add location information to photos:

  • Map View: See your photos pinned on an interactive world map.
  • Library Stats → Places: View a heatmap of where your photos were taken.
  • Dynamic Search: Type in a place name to quickly surface related images.

Without GPS data, photos won’t appear in Map View. Adding coordinates guarantees your images show up when browsing or searching by place.

Simple Ways to Add Location Information

Not every photo comes with GPS data—but you can fix that quickly:

  • Drag and drop: Move one or more images onto the map in Mylio Photos’ Info Panel to assign a location.
  • Copy and paste coordinates: Take GPS info from a smartphone photo and apply it to DSLR shots taken at the same time.

PRO TIP: To locate untagged photos quickly, use the View Untagged button in the bottom left corner of Map View.

Don’t worry about being perfect. Start by tagging photos with general locations—like “Paris” or “Eiffel Tower.” You can refine details later. Adding some location information is far better than leaving images blank.

Explore with Photo Explorer

Once you add location information to photos, you can use Photo Explorer in Mylio to open the exact spot in Google Maps, Apple Maps, Bing, or OpenStreetMap. It’s a fun way to revisit past adventures or even plan your next trip.

Keep Your Stories Alive

Adding location data isn’t just about organization—it’s about preserving the stories behind your photos. A picture tagged with “Grand Canyon” carries a stronger memory than one left without context. By taking a few moments to add location information to photos, you’re making your library more meaningful, searchable, and enduring.
